The Pros of Remodeling Your Kitchen

When we are interested in doing something, such as a home improvement project, there are many of us who are unsure what we should do, if we should even do anything at all. When it comes to deciding on a plan or a course of action, many individuals make the decision to focus on the good and the bad of the situation, this is most commonly referred to as the pros and the cons.  If you are thinking about remodeling your kitchen, you may be wondering what the plus side of doing so is, otherwise know as the pros.  Well, if you are interested in remodeling your kitchen, you are in luck.  There are an unlimited number of ways that you can benefit from having your kitchen remodeled.

Perhaps, the greatest pro or positive benefit to having your kitchen remodeled is the increase in your home’s value.  When it comes to kitchen remodeling and home values, you will find that, in most cases, a home’s value increases with a remodeling project, including a kitchen remodeling project.  Although a large number of homes see an increase in their value, thanks to a kitchen remodeling project, not all of them do. Honestly, it all depends on the quality of the remodeling done. If a remodeling project is poor in quality or it may later lead to additional problems with the home, you will find that the value with not increase, but it might even decrease.

Another pro to remodeling your kitchen is the fact that you will, essentially, be getting a new kitchen. Although some homeowners choose to only remodel a small portion of their kitchen, others go right out and remodel the whole thing. Whether you make the decision to simply change your kitchen countertops and cabinets, or change your kitchen counters, cabinets, sink, oven, floor tiles, and wall paint, there is a good chance that your kitchen may appear as if it is a whole, brand new kitchen. As a homeowner, you may enjoy the change.

One of the many other pros to kitchen remodeling is one that you might not necessarily have thought of before.  That pro is who can do the remodeling.  As a homeowner, you have complete control over what you would like done, as well as who can do it.  This means that if you would like to do your own kitchen remodeling, you can easy do so.  If you do not have the time or the skill needed to remodel your own kitchen, you could also hire a professional to do it for you.  You also have complete control over who you hire to remodel your kitchen, as well as how much you want to pay.  That is one of the many pros to having your kitchen remodeling, even if you can’t do it yourself; there is someone else out there who can.

As previously mentioned, as a homeowner, you have complete control over what will and will not happen in your home. In addition to deciding whether or not you will do your own kitchen remodeling, you can also decide which type of remodeling is done.  If you need to fix a few repairs, you could easily remodel only a portion of your kitchen, but if you would like a whole new look, you could remodel your whole kitchen; the decision is yours to make.  You can also decide how you would like each portion of your kitchen remodeled. For instance, if you are interested in replacing your kitchen counter, you can easily find and choose the new materials, supplies, and designs that you want to use.  The choice that you have is just one of the many pros to kitchen remodeling.

Although there are a number of pros to kitchen remodeling, there are also a number of cons.  Cons are another way to describe disadvantages.  The biggest con or disadvantage to remodeling your kitchen is the fact that it cannot only be costly, but time consuming. You may be able to recuperate the cost of your repairs, if and when you go to sell your home, but nothing is guaranteed. Since there are a number of pros and cons to kitchen remodeling, you will need to decide which is best for you. Perhaps, the best way to do this is to decide whether or not the pros outweigh the cons.

Steam Carpet Cleaning

The process of steam cleaning your carpet involves hot water being fed to a spray extraction tool or wand, coupled to a pump vacuum power unit. The cleaning solution is injected under pressure deep into the carpet through water jet nozzles.

The water will then penetrate the fiber all the way down to the backing. This action will loosen any embedded soil, remove oil and grease deposits, and get your carpet cleaner than it has ever been.

There are many types and makes of steam carpet cleaners available on the market, ranging from small portables to the large and very powerful truck mounted units. The principle is the same no matter what model you pick.

The models that are truck mounted are designed so that only the hose and the wand are taken into the area being cleaned. These units are very powerful, delivering hot water and generating a high vacuum recovery that can be powered by diesel fuel, gas, propane, or even by the motor of the truck.

Most carpet manufacturers, fiber producers, and professional cleaners endorse this process for achieving soil removal efficiency. With the present state of art equipment and technology, we are more than capable of high production and cleaning of carpet.

The real disadvantage to steam carpet cleaning are the problems that are associated with over wetting and longer drying times. These can be eliminated however, by a skilled operator who uses equipment that is well maintained and in good overall operating condition.

Currently, there are two methods being used with steam carpet cleaning. 1. This method involves a traffic lane cleaner being sprayed onto the traffic lanes and then agitated into the fibers. The entire area is then cleaned by using a hot water extractor that has a cleaning solution being injected into the fibers through the wand. 2. The second method involves a free rinse emulsifying pre-spray being sprayed onto the entire carpet, then agitated into the fibers.

Steam cleaning procedures 1. Prepare the equipment and supplies. In a pump or power sprayer you should mix the free rinsing pre-spray. In the solution tank of the extractor, mix the rinsing agent. 2. If you have a lot of furniture to move, make yourself a floor plan. 3. If the area being cleaned has furniture, you should remove as much as possible. 4. Thoroughly vacuum the carpet. If the pile is crushed or matted, use a pile brush to loosen the soils which will make vacuuming more effective. 5. Pre-spray a good amount of the pre-spray. 6. Using a grooming tool, agitate the pre spray deep into the fibers then let it sit for 10 – 15 minutes, making sure that it doesn’t dry out. 7. Extract the area using a portable, truck mounted, or automatic carpet cleaner. 8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 until the entire area has been cleaned. 9. Groom the cleaned area, replace all furniture that was removed, then clean all equipment that you used.

Why You Should Remodel Your Kitchen

Are you a homeowner?  If so, have you ever thought about remodeling your kitchen before?  While a fairly large number of homeowners think about remodeling their kitchen, not everyone makes the decision to do so.  There are a number of reasons why a homeowner wishes to remodel their kitchen, but later decides not to.  One of those reasons is the uncertainty. It is not uncommon for you and other homeowners to be wondering whether or not you really need to have your kitchen remodeled. While there is always a chance that you may not, there is also a chance that a kitchen remodeling project is just what you, your home, and your kitchen needs.

One of the most obvious reasons why you should remodel your kitchen is if you want to.  While a large number of individuals wonder whether or not they should, the uncertainty most commonly has to do with spending the extra money.  If you have the extra money and you want to remodel your kitchen, you should.  If you are interested in remodeling your kitchen, there is a good chance that you may be unhappy with your current kitchen.  Since your home, particularly your kitchen, is something that you spend the majority of your time in, you will want to make sure that it is warm, welcoming, and inviting. If your current kitchen scheme makes you feel uncomfortable or if you just want to change it, go right ahead, you could benefit from doing so, a number of different ways.

In addition to knowing for sure that a kitchen remodeling project is what is needed, there are other homeowners who want a change, but don’t necessarily know what that change should be.  When this feeling is present, many homeowners automatically assume that they should purchase a new home, because they are no longer satisfied with the one that they live in.  If you want to purchase a new home, go right ahead, the decision is yours to make. However, before you start searching for a new home, one that actually peaks your interest, you may want to think about changing your home around a little bit.  By remodeling your home, you could easily spice up your home or even make it feel like something new.  As an experiment to see how to goes, you may want to first try remodeling your kitchen.

Another fairly oblivious reason, why it may be a good idea to remodel your kitchen, is if your kitchen needs repairs. Although it is possible to fix a broken cupboard or replace a few kitchen floor tiles, you may want to do more than that. The perfect time to remodel your kitchen is when you have work in your kitchen that you need to do anyways.  Even if you do not decide to remodel your whole kitchen, you can focus on a particular part of it, such as your countertops or floor, if you wish.  If your kitchen has missing floor tiles or broken cupboards, you are still advised to do those repairs, especially if they may be putting you or your family in danger, safety wise.

If all of the above mentioned reasons weren’t enough, there is one more reason why you should remodel your kitchen. That reason is one that could bring you money, sometime in the future.  One of the greatest reasons why you should remodel your kitchen is because it is likely to increase the overall value of your home.  Any time that a home is remodeled, as long as the remodeling job was successful, the home’s value increases.  This means that if you make the decision to sell your home in the future, you could easily get more money for your home than you paid for it. Depending on how long it has been since your repairs were done and how they were paid for, you could easily get a full return on your investment, which was your decision to remodel your kitchen.

As you can easily see, there are a number of different reasons why you should want to or at least want consider remodeling your kitchen. Of course, the decision is yours to make, but it is a good idea to keep the above mentioned points in mind.

Home Decorating for the Basement

The basement is often a neglected point in many homes around the country. This space in many homes is more utilitarian than functional. The sad thing is that this space could be so much more for those who are interested in taking the time and paying the attention required to change the look from functional to fabulous. In many basements this will require a little more than minor home decorating skills while in other basements around the country all that is needed is a little color and a lot of style to make the basement the most in demand room in the house.

One common complaint that people have about basements is the fact that they are so dark and dreary. The reason for this is that most basements have little natural light that is allowed to flourish due to a serious lack of windows. However, this can also work to your benefit if you decide to use the basement as a media area. In fact, with the low ceiling and low light in the basement, this is probably the most perfect area in your home to turn into an excellent media room complete with surround sound and theater style seating. The only problem in this case will be getting the neighbors to quit begging to watch this week’s newest DVD release at your house rather than their own. To pull this off you will want darker colored walls, floors, and ceiling in this room, a large screen television, comfortable seating and plenty of tables upon which you can place your beverages and popcorn.

Another great idea for basements is an artist or music studio. Basements can easily be portioned off into smaller rooms and all kinds of lighting can be installed in order to accommodate the lighting needs of many artists (keep in mind that one size does not fit all and artists that need natural light in order to work will not find most basements accommodating). By creating a smaller room, particularly for musicians, you are allowing yourself the additional option of soundproofing or at the very least dampening the room in order to save not only your ears but also the ears of the neighbors and animals that live nearby. These rooms can be simply furnished and decorated with music notes, a music stand, a comfortable place to sit, and the equipment needed to create music for musicians or an easel, art supplies, wash basin, comfortable seating, and perhaps a futon for relaxation for artists.

If you are in need of a quiet place that is removed from the family in which to work (and who isn’t really) the basement offers an ideal workspace for that provided you could get the lighting you need. Most people will need a professional to install the lights in a basement but most people will definitely need additional lighting in the basement in order to find the space tolerable for work. However, once the lighting situation is taken care of, the basement does make an excellent office space for many people. Try adding filing cabinets and photos, perhaps a fountain in order to make the area more serene and conducive to the work that needs to be done. Of course you will want comfortable seating and adequate desk or work table space as well. Design this room as you would any home office and it should do just well regardless of your home decorating talent.

One thing you need to keep in mind when it comes to home decorating and the basement is that many basements have a tendency to seep in high humidity or after heavy rains. Dehumidifiers assist with this problem but you may need to decorate with this in mind if the water and moisture is problematic. You will want to avoid mold and mildew at all cost, as they will ruin any potential enjoyment of your basement. Cork and ceramic tile are excellent flooring choices in this case and moisture barriers are an excellent idea to install before ‘finishing’ a basement.

Installing Carpet

A majority of how your interior looks and feels will depend on your floors.  Houses that have carpet give off an undeniable warmth, vibrancy, and an aesthetic appeal.  There is a wide range of colors, textures, materials, and designs available that can transform your home and give every room a chance to be unique.  Your carpet installation has a long term perspective, so it’s important that you select the best one for your needs and install it right the first time.

Once you have picked out your material and design, you’ll need to it install it.  Professional carpet installers can do the job for you, or you can choose to do it yourself.  Even though doing it yourself is cheaper than hiring a professional, it isn’t  recommended if you don’t have the right tools, lack time, or have no experience.

A great way to ensure a professional installation of your carpet is to buy from an authorized carpet retailer or dealer.  Most of the time, your carpet retailer will have an installation staff that is very experienced with installing carpet.

If the retailer doesn’t offer an installation service, they can still guide you to a reputable and experienced installer.  Even though installation by a retailer is a bit more expensive, it offers several advantages.  The experience will show in
their work and you’ll come out better in the long run.  You can also approach them if you aren’t  satisfied with anything they have done.

However, if you are looking for low budget carpet installation services, you’ll also have the option of hiring  independent contractors, architects, builders, or interior designers.  You should always remember to get their references and inquire about their experience, where they received their training, and any certification they may have.

You can also visit homes that the installer has previously worked on, as this will give you an idea of their work before you hire them.  If it  isn’t possible, you should at least make it a  point to see some pictures of their work.

Even though private contractors may offer a lower rate for carpet installation than your retailer, the services of post installation may be very poor.  If you encounter a problem, you’ll find that your options are limited.  No matter what
happens, if you choose an independent carpet installer, you should always make sure that the installer follows the standard for installation of residential carpet CRI 105.

Choosing the right installer for your carpet will entirely depend on your specific needs.  If you like to change your carpet type every few years, you may be better off to choose an independent carpet installer.  If you want carpet that will last for a long time, you should get a follow up from a retailer, as this will ensure that you have a trouble free experience with installation.

No matter who you choose, you should ensure prior to installation the carpet is power stretched so wrinkling and rippling will be minimized. It is also important that your rooms are  measured before laying any of them and the sub
floor has been cleaned.

You should also vacuum the old carpet good before it is removed, to help eliminate dust.  Once the new carpet is down, the edges should be trimmed and sealed with hardwood.  You should always inspect the carpet, and make sure that nothing looks out of the ordinary and that everything pleases you before you finish the deal.

You should always keep in mind that no matter how expensive or exotic your carpets may be, it is the installation process that makes or breaks the look of your home.  Therefore, it pays off to invest a bit of time, money, and effort when you choose the right installer for your carpet.
